Dawn at the Ouse

River Ouse, York
45 minutes

The mist lifting off the water was extraordinary this morning. I watched a heron stand perfectly still for what felt like forever, then strike with incredible precision. The whole riverbank smelled of damp earth and fresh growth. Spring is arriving quietly.

Lunchtime Alley Walk

The Shambles, York
30 minutes

Took a different route through the snickelways today. Found a tiny courtyard I had never seen before, hidden behind a bookshop. There was a single bench and a climbing rose just starting to bud. Sat for ten minutes and felt the city disappear.

Evening Soundwalk

Rowntree Park, York
1 hour

Deliberately left my headphones at home and just listened. The layering of sounds was remarkable: birdsong above, footsteps on gravel, a distant train, children laughing across the pond. I counted seven distinct bird calls. The park feels completely different when you truly listen.
